Statement of Intent
“The former German colonial diamond mining towns of Kolmanskop and Elizabeth Bay in Namibia have been abandoned for more than sixty years. This panel aims to show how the elements have collaborated with time to affect the infrastructure and accommodation.
The desert has infiltrated and, in places, almost consumed many of the structures. Floors are covered by, and doors stand ajar supported by, drifts of sand. The buildings have weathered over the years; intense sunlight cuts through the unsound walls and ceilings casting shadows; glass has been blown from its frame. Power generating boilers and household furniture have remained in place but left to rust.
Notwithstanding the onslaught by the elements and passing of time, much of the original architecture has retained its allure and the décor its ‘diamond’ brilliance.”
